As someone that lead efforts in data systems that included Machine Learning at various companies, including Nike, I can attest that what Mo describes in Scary Smart is not science fiction. For decades it has been questioned whether technology is in itself good or bad, whether it is possible to give an ethical judgment about the development of different platforms, social networks, devices for all types of activity. Until now there was no clear path in this regard but, Mo Gwadat answers “The course of action we take at any given time is also the result of a value system that guides us and sometimes restricts us from making decisions that contradict our values”. This shows us the importance that ethics plays in the construction of new technological tools and makes this reading a "must" for anyone interested in ethics and AI issues. Likewise, Scary Smart gives us a much broader view of the attempts that have been made in the past to reach AI, the mistakes, the learnings, the experiences that show us what we should and should not do around these issues. Finally, Mo Gwadat gives us a vision of the future, a possible utopia or dystopia that can lead the world to be better or to destruction. Somehow we as a society are parents of technology: “I recognized that for every improvement technology has given us, it also took away part of who we are”; We adopt or leave tools that may or may not be useful to us to be better, we can help improve or worsen new technologies, in the end it is in our hands to help the world and make it a better place for generations to come.
